[2Fe2S] Electrocatalysts for H2 Production – a Renewable, Green Fuel

Molecular hydrogen is a promising alternative fuel. This lecture will present the development of compounds featuring earth-abundant elements: iron and sulfur, as electrocatalysts for the conversion of transient electricity into storable chemical energy. These catalysts have unprecedentedly high turnover numbers for reducing weak acids into H2; as illustrated below bubbles of H2 are rapidly produced at the electrode surface. The novel chemistry engendered in these reactions featuring non-innocent ligands will be presented.
