Contested Frontiers: Land Enclosures and Indigenous Mobilizsation in Myanmar’s Uplands

Seminarraum Internationale Entwicklung
Spitalgasse 2/ Hof 5, 1090 Wien

Vortrag

Conflicts over land and resources have become a widespread feature of Myanmar's transition. Whereas many areas of the country have been affected by land conflicts, the implications and patterns are not the same in all regions. This is in particular true for the resource rich ethnic states with a long history of (armed) struggle for self-determination, and very particular political and economic contexts. Long regarded as "frontier" areas where the central state's authority was limited at best, the ethnic states are currently confronted with major challenges as well opportunities. The presentation will focus on conflicts over (customary) land tenure in Chin-State as a case study. It will also discuss transnational discourses of indigenous rights, promoted by civil society actors in order to secure their access to land. The presentation is reflecting on recent fieldwork conducted between October and December 2016.
