Perspectives for Peace in the South Caucasus

Presentation of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Platform for Peace

Hörsaal BIG 1 im Hauptgebäude der Universität Wien
Universitätsring 1, 1010 Wien

Präsentation

By the time a cease-fire went into effect in 1994, the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan produced

more than a million refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) on both sides. The OSCE Minsk

Group, which was tasked to mediate a peaceful resolution of the conflict, is yet to yield results. The

conflict remains the biggest challenge to peace and security in the South Caucasus and is an obstacle to

full-fledged regional cooperation.

In the absence of contacts between the peoples of Armenia and Azerbaijan, the human rights defending

organizations and members of civil society institutions from Armenia and Azerbaijan came together in

November 2016 to organize international conference entitled “Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh

conflict: main obstacles and prospects of the settlement. View from Armenia and Azerbaijan”. The

participants adopted an appeal to the Presidents and Peoples of Armenia and Azerbaijan, where they

declared the importance of public diplomacy for the soonest settlement of the conflict by peaceful means.

On 6 December 2016, the new proposed peace initiative was announced as the “Armenia-Azerbaijan

Platform for Peace”.

The members of the Platform will present the Platform, its goals and expected outcomes to the

international community.

The event will be held in English and Russian with interpretation.
