2016 marks the seventieth anniversary of the 1946 “Lviv Sobor” which liquidated one of the Eastern Catholic Churches—the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church—within the Soviet Union. The whole Ukrainian Greek-Catholic hierarchy within Soviet-controlled territory was arrested the previous year by Soviet authorities and sentenced to hard labour in Siberian prison camps, serving as “laboratories of ecumenism” where the Church was “purified by persecution”.

The first half of the conference focuses on historical questions, including the context of twentieth-century Eastern Europe, Uniatism, and Catholic-Orthodox relations, in order to facilitate sincere discussion of sensitive issues and lead to the “healing of memories” through anamnesis—not amnesia.

The second half of the conference examines the fallout from the “Lviv Sobor” from 1946 until the present, and looks at the place of Eastern Catholic Churches within the Ecumenical movement made possible by the Second Vatican Council. The final day of the conference will focus on arriving at a common narrative of the events and fallout of the “Lviv Sobor” and propose ways forward in dialogue, keeping a place open at the table for Eastern Catholic Churches.

The ultimate goal is to arrive at a common narrative that takes all sides into consideration. The conference intends to bring together scholars and representatives of the Catholic and Orthodox Churches in order to facilitate sincere and open dialogue. Such a conference is ever more necessary due to the renewal of Christian persecution today, as well as war in Ukraine, which focus attention once more on the crisis of the divided Church.
