Politics of the Poor

The paper will argue that while differences in the treatment of the poor in anthropology can be traced to different regional traditions of studying political mobilization and/or various regional histories of political formation, considerable variation also reflects the different ways in which the poor appear in social theory (e.g. Bourdieu, Simmel, or Ranciere). What can ethnography contribute to an understanding of the poor, their experience of privation and their capacity for collective action? How is the struggle with insecurity and precocity engaged with in a given form of life? How do the poor try to make their worlds inhabitable in hope and with patience, in disappointment and despair? These are some of the questions that will be addressed using material from fieldwork in Bombay and Ahmedabad, western India.
Shalini Randeria is currently the rector of the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna. Until December 2014 she was Professor and Chair of the Department of Social Anthropology and Sociology at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, which she joined in 2012, and a Visiting Professor at the Social Science Research Centre Berlin (WZB). She was furthermore President of the European Association of Social Anthropologists (EASA), a Fellow of the Institute of Advanced Studies, Berlin, and a Member of the Senate of the German Research Council (DFG). Before joining the Graduate Institute in Geneva, Shalini Randeria was Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Zurich, as well as Professor and Founding Chair of the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology of the Central European University Budapest. She has held Visiting Professorships at Ludwig Maximilians University, Munich (as Max Weber Professor for Sociology), at the University of Vienna (Peter Ustinov Professorship) and at EHESS, Paris. She currently serves on the Advisory Board of the Wenner-Gren Foundation, New York, and on the editorial board of the Annual Review of Anthropology. She has published widely on the anthropology of globalization, law, the state and social movements.
