Vortrag

According to some estimates, the global infrastructure gap projected from now to the year 2035 encompasses approximately $ US 5.5 trillion. At the same time, $ US 80 trillion worth of capital are being managed by institutional investors around the world in constant search for profitable investment options. Under the aegis of the G20, multilateral development banks (MDBs) reacted to this ostensible ‘win-win situation’ and increased their efforts in leveraging private investment to cover the global thirst for infrastructure. This evolving new face of infrastructure finance and private investment poses considerable challenges in Southeast Asia, in particular against the backdrop of growing authoritarianism and shrinking space for genuine civic participation in the region. The lecture takes stock of these trends as they are increasingly harming already vulnerable communities in the region, and discusses alternatives towards more sustainable infrastructure investment policies in Southeast Asia.
