Brain mapping on varieties of aesthetic experience

Talk of Tomohiro Ishizu, PhD

Vortrag

Neuroimaging studies on aesthetic experiences have discovered what neural correlates underlie the experience of beauty in diverse sources. But to experience something as beautiful implies having made a judgment about it. In this talk, I will show that there are brain systems that are apparently specific for aesthetic judgment and other systems that aesthetic judgments share with other cognitive judgments (such as brightness). Crucially, the system for aesthetic judgments involves, among other areas, the medial orbitofrontal cortex, which is also evidently important in the experience of beauty. I also show preliminary results on the chronological architecture of activity produced by the aesthetic judgments within the brain areas which past studies have shown to correlate with the experience of beauty.
