Rivers of Blood, Sea of Bodies

Guest lecture by Dr. Carole Murphy (Senior Lecturer in Criminology and Sociology, Deputy Director of the Centre for the Study of Modern Slavery, St. Mary's University, London)

Hörsaal C1 (HS) am Campus der Universität Wien

Vortrag

The intersection of migration and human trafficking and discussions about innocence and culpability are evident in the negative discourses that abound in contemporary media representations. The amorphous mass emerging to the shore embodies cultural anxieties about sea beasts. Media reports utilise these anxieties to dehumanise victims. From this perspective, 'rivers of blood' (Enoch Powell, circa 1968) have been transformed into a 'Sea of Bodies', flooding the shores of Europe.

Carole Murphy is a Senior Lecturer in the Criminology and Sociology Programmes, and Deputy Director of the Centre for the Study of Modern Slavery at St Mary's University, London.
