Sara Jordenö // Documentary // Sweden, USA // 2016 // 94 min // OV English

Twenty-five years after Madonna’s ‘Vogue’ and the documentary ‘Paris Is Burning’, Sara Jordenö’s Kiki leads us through the modern New York ballroom scene. The glamour and flamboyance of the balls, the costumes, the dance and the music accompany a story which is ultimately about young LGBTQI people of colour, self-organising to provide each other with health information, family structures, social support and rights; areas where their own families and the state have failed them.

The film’s seven protagonists are followed over the course of four years, where they religiously practice, prepare for and perform at balls, whilst, at the same time, growing, transitioning, dealing with enormous emotional challenges, struggling with money, homelessness, health and prejudices and fighting for their rights, above all, to express themselves.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with Faika El-Nagashi (Vienna Provincial Parliament & Vienna City Council, Green Party Vienna), Saif Rangwala (MiGaY, Transition FF) and Michael Richter (HOSI Wien), moderated by Djamila Grandits (this human world).

The event is held in English!

The series CINEMA & HUMAN RIGHTS is organized by the Research Centre Human Rights of the University of Vienna in cooperation with the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights.

The event takes place in cooperation with Grüne Bildungswerkstatt Wien.

Djamila Grandits (this human world) moderiert.
