Vortrag
In occupational health psychology (OHP) an important question is “why does work stress make you sick?”. Physiological strain indicators are seen as one pathway that link the experience of workplace stress to the development of ill health. Investigating relationships between workplace stressors and indicators of physiological strain reactions is therefore important for OHP. However, physiological strain indicators are manifold, their analysis is rather complex, and the results in OHP field studies are much less promising than hoped for. In this talk, I will shortly introduce two central physiological strain indicators (heart rate variability and saliva cortisol). I will then present two of my own studies, applying these indicators in OHP field studies. Additionally, I will discuss pitfalls and obstacles, when using these indicators, and explain why these indicators provide hard data, but with uncertain interpretations.
