In 1929, Germany's homosexual emancipation movement – the world's first gay rights movement – achieved a high-water mark when a committee of Germany's parliament voted to repeal the sodomy law. Yet this historic moment was not without its dark side. In this lecture, Professor Laurie Marhoefer of the University of Washington (USA) draws on her 2015 book Sex and the Weimar Republic to examine the price of the liberation achieved with the repeal of the sodomy law, the extent to which it signalled a form of "homonormativity" at work, and what all this means for queer history and the rise of the Nazis.
